DJ Mag Top 100 Results - The Risen and The Fallen.
26th October, 2007
DJ Mag has a new star in it's galaxy of Top 100 DJs worldwide. Ladies and Gentlemen, give it up for Armin van Buuren, the man who influenced millions to vote for him as the No. 1 DJ for 2007. This is a straight hop from the No.2 position that he was holding last year. Most of the Trance listeners agree it was a well deserved jump for Armin for the year 2007 has been rocked by him completely. His undue dedication and contribution to Trance music via his A State Of Trance radio show and compilations, his floor shattering gigs around the world has finally paid off where he overtook Tiësto and Paul van Dyk on No.2 and No.4 respectively.
With more than 3,45,000 votes DJ Mag saw an increase in voting numbers by a massive 60%! More to the figures, 228 countries voted for 89,393 nominated DJs. There was a complete traffic jam in the list as 2007 saw 15 new entries, 12 re-entries, 4 non-movers and 45 DJs moving up! Sources say that 637 different names of Armin van Buuren were voted with erroneous spellings. The Top 100 list saw Richie Hawtin moving up 14 places, Sven Väth 17, Umek 53, Picotto 37, Anderson Noise 25, Kanzyani, Luciano and Booka Shade as new entries while Villalobos, Bailey, Mills, Magda, Beyer and Laurent Garnier re-entering the top 100. All the DJs belonging to one genre 'Tech/Techno'!
The results have fallen right and wrong on the voter's expectations as we see a bit of everything on Top 10, Trance, House and Psy, accommodating DJs from all the major genres of EDM. However, major domination is held by Progressive Trance DJs Armin van Buuren (1), Tiësto (2), Paul van Dyk (4), Above & Beyond (6) and Ferry Corsten (8). Following the mix-up are four House DJs John Digweed with a rewarding No. 3, Sasha (5), Carl Cox (7) and David Guetta on No. 10.
All of us expected last year that Armin would make it to the top spot. But the German superstar once again defended his title. So, this year it was obvious that Armin had to be the undisputed one. Another DJ to elevate to the No. 2 position is none another than Dutch superstar Tiësto, passing up PvD from No 3. It was a tie for Tiësto and Armin, pre-results it was highly unfathomable for people to know who has the potential to stand at No. 1. Sometime the clock pointed at Tiësto and the other time it was Armin.
The reason we calculate for PvD going down on No. 4 is not following the Trance chores and producing/playing more Techno music, call this experiment risky or his own like, PvD below a House DJ is a bit hard to digest for his fans.
DJ Shah should have been one contender in the top 100 with his multiple Radio Shows (all done live), 3 Mix CDs in one year, not to forget his artist albums and with running a music label, this man surely deserved it! His fans assume that increasing his Global tours and performances he can be a tough contender for Top 50! Tough luck for this man though!
The Official List:
01 Armin van Buuren
Finally. Five years after entering the Top 10 of our DJmag Top 100 DJs poll, Armin van Buuren has been crowned the World's No.1 DJ.
02 Tiësto - After winning three years in a row before losing his crown to Paul van Dyk last year, TiËsto once again came close to lifting the No.1 title.
03 John Digweed - John Digweed is well accustomed to long journeys. That's largely a function of his globetrotting lifestyle of course, something he's more than happy to talk about when DJmag tracks him down at Dallas airport.
04 Paul van Dyk - From the intense production involved in 'In Between' - the artist album he's been perfecting for the last three years - to the high-energy live sets at the world's biggest dance festivals, it's been an exceedingly busy year for Paul van Dyk.
05 Sasha - It's been a period of change for Sasha. One of the world's most widely travelled DJs, he cut back on his club activities during the first half of the year to spend more time in his studio in New York.
06 Above & Beyond - Above & Beyond's vault from innovative trance trio to globe-trotting DJ superstars is now complete.
07 Carl Cox - "Over the years, people have got used to labeling me a techno DJ", reckons Carl Cox. "But I've been a drum & bass DJ, a house DJ, a hardcore DJ, a soul DJ - some called me a trance DJ in my F.A.C.T. days. I just try not to be pigeon-holed."
08 Ferry Corsten - Architect, pioneer, instigator - refer to him anyway you want. Ferry was unquestionably the man behind 1999's Great Dutch Trance Breakout, splitting the door wide open with "Out Of The Blue", "Carte Blanche" and "Gouryella".
09 Infected Mushroom - Just two years after breaking into the Top 100 as one of the highest new entries in history, the boundary busting psy-trance overlords have finally smashed their way into the elusive number. Infected Mushroom - Amit 'Duvdev' Duvdevani and Erez Eizen - are Top 10 gunners at last.
10 David Guetta - Despite spinning from the age of 17 in various Parisian venues and now onto his third artist album, this was nevertheless the year that David Guetta really became a household name in house music.
