Interview with Heatbeat
12th June, 2009Hi Agustin & Matias! Grand Welcome on Trance Hub. Can we start with what's currently happening with Heatbeat?
A: We are freezing our ass in Buenos aires right now. But its cool since the chicks are not as hot as in summer, so we stay a lot in the studio.
M: I must say... Winter Studio Time!, Movies + Samples + Loads of food.
Considering most of your productions and remixes, you master them with dark, grungy sounds. What's unique about Heatbeat music?
A: That we don't like to use same samples in every production. It's a lazy way to produce and we don't like that. We want all the tracks unique and different from the standard trancie line.
At least... that is our intention... then you fans have to decide :P
M: Yes, to be honest we prefer dark, groovie, filthy sounds. But every production is a new story and you never know. What we always try to do is to combine trance with other styles. We are not very big fans of 100% trancie tracks.
As one of the newest and the most talented duos on the Trance music circuit, your sounds have claimed global accolades and the top jocks love it! 2006-09, how has the journey been so far for Heatbeat?
A&M: 3 Years? Wow I thought it was less. Well, we are very happy about our results. In the lastest years we had support of guys such as Armin, Paul van dyk, Judge Jules, Ferry Corsten, Tiësto so I think we are doing the things right. But now we are trying to do music for us and starting to pay less attention if "this DJ plays it, or another one". I mean... we are really happy about it, but its time to focus on our sound and on what we want to play in the clubs.
And before Heatbeat was formed, what were Agustin & Matias up to?
A: I was a little kid trying to be a superstar DJ (haha kidding). I played in some underground clubs in buenos aires, and I was working on my production side slowly.
M: I produce music since im 8 years old. We met each other because Agustin told me he loves my productions and I listened to his tracks and I really like them. So we met each other in my house and... started producing :)
What is it like working as a duo? Do you guys specialize in anything particular when we speak of music? Like one of you works on the bass line and the other on melody?
A: Well, this is a little secret that not so many people know. I produce music for 5 years, but... Matias produce SINCE he is 5!!!!, or more or less. So... I always said... what I do in 1 hour, Matias do it in 10 minutes. He is a fuckin' genius. But anyway we always produce together or sometimes I make a quick idea with some melo and Matias follows it, or the other way too. We produce, mix and master our tracks.
M: If we can, we always try to produce together. Its easier and more funny. Two heads works better than one! For us its like playing a videogame or going to see a soccer match, we love to produce music and its really a pleasure to live for this. The good thing is that we are not producing only trance, we produce... whatever we want.
We are informed that you guys are working on your first vocal tune. What can we expect from the vocal tune, considering that you guys are masters of chunky bass lines and aggressive progressions of the music?
A&M: Track is called "Heatbeat feat. Josie – Because Of You". And well... its... chunky bass and aggressive progressions... + Josie Sweetest voice. We are very happy to work with her since we are very big fans of her music. You can check the clip on our myspace, its not typical trancie tune... its... different.
What defines the modern sound of Trance music according to you both?
A: I think that if we would still producing trance of the 99, like... kick, kick + hat, obvious arpeggio and "dreamie break down" trance would die like 3 years ago. But I think trance is constantly evolving. Combined with other styles or taking out new sounds. I think its really fun because it inspirates you to make something different and something that people said "Ok... what is this????? Woow". Producers such as John O'Callaghan, Sander van Doorn, W&W, Simon Patterson, Sean Tyas are cool examples about what defines modern trance sound now a days.
One winter of 2008, I sat and listened to "Nebula" - and got teleported in space, even words seem to fail before this miraculous tune that had visuals in its bits. Where did you guys see an inspiration to create such an heavenly tune?
A&M: I think we where really drunk when we made it (haha big news). It was another intention to make something different. We still think that we have to make a follow up of that tune, since we really enjoy to make it. And it was completely different from the common Heatbeat sound, but still banger and perfect for the dance floor.
Another question related to one of your massive releases: Who is 'Chochicho'? And how was the title "Chochicho Tien Hambre" thought of?
A&M: Well... 'Chochicho' is the nickname that Agustin gave to the cat of Matias. The first time he enter in Matias house he looked at the cat and said "Hi... m... CHOCHICHO". And "tiene hambre" means "is Hungry". We where producing this track and the cat was asking for food every time so... "Chochicho Tiene Hambre". :)
We have individual producers and we have collaborations happening, and then we have trance producer duos. Do you think that the quality of production is enhanced when two people make it together?
A&M: No, its just more fun. But you cant be in the studio with anyone, you need to have some friendship or cool vibe. If not... it could be uncomfortable.
On the touring front, what places are you guys visiting this year? Which is your personal favourite club to spin?
A&M: We are gonna be in Brasil, Chile, Peru, USA (Los Angeles, Miami, New York), Centre America, Argentina of course and if we are lucky, then Europe in the end of this year.
Our Fav place to spin is Bigone Club, Buenos Aires. A Club of 2,500 people, it was a church in the 90s, and when the priest was, nos... THE DJ BOOTH IS. Crazy right?
We have lots of young producers emerging in the scene, and you both being in your early 20s, which up and coming producers are your hot favourites?
A: Breakfast, W&W , Exit (Young kids from argentina, they are gonna blow up you guys in a few months), Liam Melly, Tom Colontonio.
M: Breakfast, Re-Ward , Orjan Nilsen , Kent & Gian, Mark Sixma, Mat zo.
Every musician has an influence over his music style. Personally, what are your inspirations and influences? And how does your country, Argentina influence you for the music?
A: My influence is my girl and my family that always supports me. Also Chochicho is a big influence... you cant resist that cat!!!! Talking about Argentina, well it's a lovely place... with lovely people. Buenos Aires it's a very European city, with the hottest girls I have ever seen in my life.
M: I must said that my girl, all kinds of music like rock, classic, bands like Linkin Park or Guns & Roses. Industrial sounds like Daft Punk. I like the urban scene and the movement that Buenos Aires has, you have to visit it... its an amazing city.
